My Training Philosophy

Before I even begin to define what my training philosophy is, I must ask, what is personal training?

What Is Personal Training?
I’m sure most of you have witnessed what passes as a “personal trainer” these days. You can spot them from the gym floor in a heartbeat. From their matching sports outfit (usually black), fake enthusiasm (if you’re lucky enough). As someone who hires trainers all the time, this problem is rampant in the industry. The major culprits are the ease of entry into the industry, the absence of rigorous standards, and lack of passion exuded by trainers. The typical certification is a joke. There is a huge turnover rate in the industry because most people enter the industry with the hopes of attaining something else (usually firefighter, teacher, erotic dancer etc). I can’t believe that people are actually willing to pay for the service (if you can call it that!). The average trainer doesn’t even look like they work out! Ever go into the gym and feel like everything about it was artificial? From the brightly lit fluorescent lights, pleasant facade being exuding by the staff, the stiffness in the air?

What I Believe Personal Training Should Be
I believe Personal Training is so much more than wearing a matching sport outfit (usually black), counting reps (usually to ten), and working out (usually three times per week- Monday, Wednesday, Friday). I believe training should be fun and exhilarating. It should be the highlight of your day. Its where you shed off your work persona and realize your true potential. It is where you build key personality traits; discipline, self-respect, and perseverance that manifest themselves into your whole life. Your day is stressful and boring, the last thing you need is to give a repeat performance in the gym. Training should give you a direction and the methods to reach your goals (you do have goals- don’t you?). Your personal trainer should be committed to your goals in a sincere, no bullshit way. I believe proper personal training should push us past our comfort boundaries and let us exceed what we thought we were capable of. It should be sincere and it should exude passion. Why do anything if you aren’t passionate about it? The pursuit of our ideal bodies should coincide with the pursuit self-betterment, that includes a better understanding of ourselves. Personal training should be an investment in your body, an investment which value cannot be understated and only grows with time.

But hey that’s just me, what do I know?
